Cataño, known as “The Antechamber of the Capital”, is the smallest municipality in Puerto Rico, covering just about 5 square miles. Located on the northern coast of the island across the San Juan Bay, it borders Bayamón, Guaynabo, and Toa Baja. The municipality’s name comes from Spanish physician Hernando de Cataño, who was granted land in the area in 1569 as payment for his medical services. Originally part of Bayamón, Cataño became an independent municipality on July 1, 1927, under political circumstances aimed at weakening Bayamón’s administration by creating a new jurisdiction.

Despite its small size, Cataño is home to major attractions. Most notably, it hosts the Casa Bacardí, the largest premium rum distillery in the world, often referred to as the “Cathedral of Rum.” Founded in 1958, the facility offers historical tours, rum tastings, and mixology classes, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Cataño also features Parque La Esperanza, a recreational area with scenic views of the bay and picnic spaces, as well as the romantic Puente Rosado, where couples hang love locks as a symbol of their affection.

In recent years, Cataño has been advancing its tourism and cultural initiatives. In 2024, the municipality officially launched the Cataño Gastronomic District, an initiative aimed at establishing the town as a top-tier culinary destination. This district includes a range of restaurants and iconic venues like Don Tello, fostering local economic growth while enriching the visitor experience.

Cataño also hosts vibrant cultural events, including its Fiestas Patronales in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, held in July. These celebrations feature parades, games, crafts, traditional foods, and live entertainment, drawing locals and tourists alike. With its mix of history, culture, and ongoing tourism development, Cataño continues to thrive as a dynamic and evolving municipality.
