Cupey is the largest and one of the most populous barrios in the municipality of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with 32,833 residents according to the 2020 census. Its name comes from the cupey tree (Clusia rosea), a native Caribbean species with Taíno roots. Historically, Cupey was part of the former municipality of Río Piedras until it was annexed to San Juan in 1956. It is part of the San Juan Ecological Corridor, a conservation initiative protecting nearly 971 acres of secondary forests and green spaces, including the Botanical Garden of the University of Puerto Rico and the Cupey Arboretum. Cupey is also home to Lake Las Curías, a reservoir built in 1946 and currently managed by the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority.

In terms of quality of life, Cupey is considered a safe residential area with access to essential services. While the cost of living is about 12% higher than the island’s average, many residents appreciate the peaceful atmosphere, recreational opportunities, and proximity to educational and healthcare institutions. Recently, the municipality of San Juan inaugurated a new municipal police station in Cupey to enhance security in neighborhoods such as El Señorial and Río Piedras Heights.
