The Church of Our Lady of Candelaria and St. Matthias, built in 1729, is one of the oldest on the island and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Plaza del Mercado, inaugurated in 1925, combines Art Deco and Spanish Mission styles and now serves as a cultural arts center. The Colectiva Tabacalera, built between 1880 and 1920, is another example of the town’s rich architectural history.

The town is also famous for its natural wonders. Mar Chiquita Beach, known for its crescent-shaped limestone formation, is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The Cave of the Swallows (Cueva de las Golondrinas), located within the Hacienda La Esperanza Nature Reserve, is a sanctuary for birds and bats. This reserve—the largest in northwestern Puerto Rico—preserves diverse ecosystems such as mangroves, estuaries, and karst hills, and features the world’s only restored and functioning steam-powered sugar mill (trapiche).

Manatí’s economy is diverse, with key sectors including pharmaceuticals and agriculture, especially pineapple, coconut, and other tropical fruits. Tourism is also growing, supported by attractions like Frutos del Guacabo, a sustainable farm where visitors can explore hydroponic gardens, interact with animals, and learn about artisanal cheese-making. In terms of cuisine, local favorites like Pastelillos Lamboy, El Tren de Cano, and El Ferrocarril offer traditional dishes that reflect the rich culinary culture of the region.
